Sydney, Sept 15 (ANI): A health promotion agency has launched an online source, labialibrary.org.au, which contains images of 20 unaltered vulvas, to provide a counterbalance to pornographic images which can make women feel abnormal.
Women’s Health Victoria launched the online to reduce body image anxiety as the site promises to increase awareness regarding how a ‘normal’ vagina looks like, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Rita Butera, who is the executive director of Women’s Health Victoria, said that they were compelled to act after Medicare figures’ analysis revealed that labiaplasty and vulvoplasty surgery had risen from 640 a year in 2000-01 to 1565 in 2010-11in Australia.
Butera said that what women see and understand to be normal is not real, so it is easier for them to think that there is something wrong with their body.
She said that women’s decisions regarding cosmetic surgery get influenced by wrong body image.
Butera added that the trend of opting for a ‘vaginal rejuvenation’ operation is on a surge as women are undergoing the knife for aesthetic purposes. (ANI)
