Frankfurt, Sept. 25 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, arrived here on Wednesday enroute to the United States where he will attend the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

During his weeklong visit to the US, Dr. Singh will hold talks with US President Barack Obama in Washington DC and attend the UN General Assembly in New York, besides having a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

The Prime Minister earlier in the day said US is a long-term partner in India’s development efforts, and in fostering a global environment that is conducive to our growth.

“For India, the U.S. remains a key source of technology, investment, innovation and resources, and one of the most important destinations for our goods and services. We have productive and deepening partnerships in trade and investment, defence, counter-terrorism, intelligence, internal security, cyber security, civil nuclear energy, environment, health, higher education, space, science and technology and culture,” said Dr. Singh in his departure statement released in New Delhi before embarking on a five-day visit to the United States.

“People-to-people contacts are a strong feature of our engagement. We have also launched development partnership in third countries,” he added.

Referring to the “intensive high-level bilateral visits, Dr. Singh said: “Over the past decade, our relationship with the United States, which is one of our most important relationships, has transformed into a global strategic partnership.”

“The intensive, high-level bilateral visits over the last few months reflect the strong momentum of our engagement. We have also registered impressive progress in our cooperation across the full spectrum of the relationship,” he added.

He said he was looking forward “to discussing a broad range of global and regional developments, and how we can work together to advance our shared interests”.

During his visit to New York, Dr.Singh will also have bilateral meetings with the leaders of some of the neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh and Nepal. (ANI)

Mumbai, Sept.25 (ANI): Bollywood actors, Jaaved Jaffrey, Sharman Joshi along with Soha Ali Khan, got candid about their upcoming war comedy film ‘War Chod Na Yaar’, and talked about its concept and characterisation.

The actors said that the plot of the story was very different and refreshing and this genre is yet to be experimented in Bollywood.

“The concept of the “War Chod Na Yaar” is to let it go. In the usual daily interaction the attitude of people is to let it be that is what we have conveyed through the movie. This manner is very typical. When we associate war with this attitude, the beauty of the theme of the movie is represented,” said Jaffrey, while promoting the film.

As the first poster of the film suggests, it’s a comic war film between neighbours India and Pakistan.

In the film, Soha Ali Khan plays a television journalist and Jaffrey plays a soldier alongside Joshi.

“I got an opportunity to play a senior news reporter and I got a chance to go the border to witness the situation there. I realized that the relation between India and Pakistan are not at all like how I believed it to be. And you will see what I saw,” said Khan, while promoting the film.

The film has been primarily shot in the deserts of Rajasthan.

The film is directed by Faraz Haider and produced by AOPL Entertainment and the music is composed by Aslam Keyi. The movie is slated to release on October 11, 2013. (ANI)

Washington, Sept. 25 (ANI): Levels of social deprivation, as well as how well a patient controls their blood sugar, is an independent risk factor for mortality in people suffering from type 1 diabetes, a new study has revealed.

Research from Diabetes Clinical Academic Group at King’s Healthcare Partners, UK, and presented by Dr Stephen Thomas, Dept of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT), London, analysed blood sugar control (HbA1c levels), demographics and health resource utilisation data collected over a 10 year period for a cohort of 1038 patients with type 1 diabetes attending two inner city London specialist diabetes outpatient clinics.

All patients attending the service in 2002 with HbA1c data, a measure of blood glucose control, available for each year from 2002 to 2004 and with ongoing follow-up within the clinics until 2010 were included. Economic status was determined using the index of multiple deprivation (IMD) a weighted deprivation score derived from a national dataset based on postcode of residence.

The group had a mean age at baseline of 42 years and had had diabetes for a mean of 18 years. The average baseline HbA1c between 2002 and 2004 was 8.1 percent. In total, 37 deaths occurred by 2012 (3.6 percent cumulative mortality).

Those who died were on average older with a higher mean baseline HbA1c (9.1 percent) Having a baseline HbA1c over 9.0 percent carried a cumulative 10-year morality that was significantly increased at 9 percent. Those who died were more likely to be socially deprived, with 61 percent of deceased patients having scores in the poorest 20 percent of the population range (mean IMD score 32 points deceased vs 24 points for patients still alive).

Age, HbA1c and deprivation were all independent risk factors for death of patients with type 1 diabetes. (ANI)

Indian cricket has seen many highs in recent years

Cricket has a unique place in the hearts of Indians. Doesn’t matter if it is a city or village, you can find young boys and girls playing cricket in the streets or parks. There have been some unexpected and glorious moments in Indian Cricket. Some of these incredible happenings are listed below-

1. Anil Kumble’s 10 Wicket Haul

This is one of  the best moments in “India-Pakistan” cricket. In the 1998/99 season at Feroz Shah Kotla, after dominating the first innings of Pakistan, Anil Kumble took all 10 wickets in the second innings. He was the first Indian to do such a thing. He took 14 wickets in that match. Here is the scorecard and highlights of the 2nd innings-

2. 1983 World Cup win

This world cup victory had more importance than the 2011 world cup win. India and Zimbabwe were not playing well in those days. People started saying that these kind of teams should be banned from participating in World Cups. Both teams had only one chance to prove themselves. And India did. India lost only 2 matches in that World Cup and in the finals, at Lord’s, India defeated West Indies to win their first World Cup.

That victory stunned the world. We can say that it’s also one of the reasons why we still play cricket more than any other sport. That victory brought back the popularity of cricket in India. Roger Binny and Kapil Dev were star performers in the World Cup.

Later on, Kapil Dev became the only player to achieve the all-rounder’s double of 4,000 Test runs and 400 Test wickets.

3. Yuvraj’s six sixes

Who can forget this amazing moment !!!  T20 World Cup 2007 and Stuart Broad’s over. Yuvraj Singh and Andrew Flintoff had some argument on the field and Yuvi marked Stuart Broad as his victim for revenge. He became the second batsman, after Herschelle Gibbs, in international Cricket to hit six sixes in one over.

4. India-Pakistan Rivalry

India – Pakistan cricket matches have their own pleasure. In the past few years, Sachin Tendulkar and Shoaib Akhtar have been the centre of  excitement in Indo-Pak Cricket. When Akhtar bowls and Sachin bats, excitement and tension can be felt everywhere in fans.

One of the most memorable incidents in Indo-Pak cricket happened when Virender Sehwag, while batting during a match, was peppered with a series of bouncers and short balls from Akhtar. He wanted Sehwag to hook and event teased him to do so. Sehwag’s response was “Your daddy is batting at the other end, ask him and he will hook”.  Sachin was batting at the other end. Shoaib bowled the bouncer to him. Sachin hooked him for 6 and that is when Sehwag uttered that words “Beta, Beta hota hai aur Baap Baap.” (The son is always the son, and the father is always the father)

5. Sehwag’s 219

Virender Sehwag is very well known for his aggressive batting style and he showed his dominant form on 8 December 2011 against West Indies at Indore. He scored 219 in just 149 balls in an ODI match, breaking the record of Sachin Tendulkar (200). This is the highest individual score in the history of ODI matches.

Besides this, Sehwag also holds the record of highest individual in test (319) by an Indian. He has scored 2 triple centuries, 6 double centuries, fastest triple century and consecutive 150+ scores in Tests. He is the first person in the history of Test cricket to hit two triple centuries and take five wickets in a Test innings.

6. T20 and 2011 World Cup victories

India and Pakistan met once again in the finals of first ever T20 World Cup in South Africa. In a challenging match India managed to score 157/5 in 20 overs; Gautam Gambhir scored 75 in 54 balls. The match was almost in India’s hand. Pakistan didn’t have a good start. But in the dying moments, Misbah-ul-Haq showed his skills with the bat . He dominated every Indian bowler and led Pakistan within touching distance, only 13 runs away from victory. They had one over and one wicket left. Then this happened:

This was the most thrilling match between India and Pakistan where somehow India won and became World T20 champion.

Again in 2011, ‘Dhoni and Company’ ended a 28-year wait for Indian cricket by winning the ODI World Cup after they defeated Sri Lanka in the finals.  That was the proudest moment for every Indian cricket fan. Fans were celebrating this win like they would the Diwali festival. Sachin Tendular waited too long for this and he finally got what he had dreamt of. Watch some highlights of the match-

After those T20 and World Cup victory, Dhoni went on to be regarded as one of the most successful captains of India. The man from Ranchi had proven himself and he had carved out a special place in the hearts of Indian cricket fans.

7. Dada at the Lord’s balcony

India have won many matches against England. So what’s special about this victory ? Why was the Lord’s victory so important to India ?

It all started when England visited India for six ODIs  in 2001/02. In the last match, after taking the wicket of Javagal Srinath, Flintoff  removed his shirt and celebrated with teammates on the ground. India was winning the series, but after that match the series ended as a draw.

Soon India got a chance to take revenge. In 2002, India faced England in the finals of the Natwest Series at ‘The Home of Cricket : Lords’. India successfully chased down the massive total of 325 in 49.3 overs. And then ‘Dada’ did the same. He removed his shirt and waved it in the air just like Flintoff did. Tit-for-Tat.

8. Breaking ‘The Wall’

Rahul Dravid has always been the backbone of team India and that’s why he is known as “The Wall”. You can imagine his greatness by the fact that he has been involved in the most number of partnerships (738) and more partnership runs (32,039) than any other batsman in Test cricket. He also holds the record for the most number of hundred run partnerships (88) and 50 run  partnerships (126).

9. Sachin’s 100th hundred

The list is incomplete without this man’s contribution to Indian cricket. Making 100 centuries in cricket is not an easy task, but this man has done this. He has scored 51 Test and 49 ODI hundreds to make a total of 100 centuries in international cricket. Indian fans had waited too long for this moment. Watch this incredible moment-

10. The youngster era

After winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2013, Indian youngsters have proven themselves. It’s a good sign for the future of Indian cricket. Shikhar Dhawan, who was good from the starting of his career, has once again showed that he is here to stay in the team.

New Delhi, Sep 24 (IANS) Actress Shraddha Kapoor has something more than just acting on her mind. The “Aashiqui 2″ actress wants to start taking music lessons again.

The 24-year-old, who took singing lessons in her childhood, decided to exercise her vocal skills after playing the role of singer Arohi in her debut movie “Aashqui 2″ opposite Aditya Roy Kapoor.

“I am really keen to start my music riyaz (practice) once again. Playing Arohi only reminded me how much I missed doing it,” Shraddha said in a statement.

The actress will soon be seen in Punit Malhotra‘s forthcoming movie “Gori Tere Pyaar Mein”.

‘Student Of The Year’ cast reunites

Actors Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, who got their big break in Bollywood with the 2012 movie “Student Of The Year” (SOTY), came together to perform at an event.

The event took place Sep 22 in Hong Kong where all three actors enjoyed dancing to popular tracks from the movie such as “Radha teri chunri”, said a statement.

“Sidharth Malhotra recently had a small reunion with his fellow co-stars Alia and Varun. They performed on all the popular songs of their debut film on this Saturday in Hong Kong,” said a source.

Meanwhile all of them are busy with their individual projects.

While Alia will soon be seen in Imtiaz Ali’s “Highway”, a movie adaptation of author Chetan Bhagat’s “Two States”, Varun will be seen in his father David Dhawan’s directorial venture “Main Tera Hero”.

Sidharth will show grey shades in Ekta Kapoor‘s upcoming project “The Villain”.

He seemed cheerful: Big B on Dilip Kumar

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan says veteran actor Dilip Kumar was cheerful when he went to meet him in a hospital here.

The 90-year-old was admitted to Lilavati Hospital Sep 15 after suffering a mild heart attack. His health has improved and he has been shifted to a private room from the intensive care unit (ICU).

The “Mughal-E-Azam” actor is married to veteran actress Saira Banu.

“He seemed cheerful, at least when he saw me. Sairaji warned me that he had been quite irritable and non-cooperative throughout the day, and so to excuse any kind of untoward behaviour that he may dole out to me. But he was gracious and kind,” Amitabh posted on his blog.

“But he smiled when he saw me and when I held his hand he gripped it like I would never be able to extricate myself from it

According to a source, Dilip Kumar may be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days.
